Speaker 2 4:44
Hello. Thank you. Good to be here as well. Thank you. Thanks for having me.
Donna 4:49
Yeah, absolutely. Um, so your Business Center Stage Dance has been around for just a couple of years like 23 which is really impressive. You really impressive before we dive into a little bit more about your journey, and you tell us a little bit more about yourself and your business? Who have you got on your team? How many team members do you have? And you know, tell us more about the size of your business?
Taryn 5:14
Sure. So on my team now, I have about goes between 16 to 20 teachers at a time. And sometimes that's, you know, sometimes there's teachers that will only do a couple hours a week, and then we've got, you know, full full time staff as well. So that's grown, obviously, over the years from back in the day where it was just probably a couple of us, three of us or three main teachers where we started. So yeah, I started in a little in a community center, in the heart of one of the suburbs here, Bella Gera. And I really loved that because it was just like, literally in the heart of a suburb. Lots of children around and that sort of stuff. And we've just grown over the years and ended up in my own studio now. And with that, yeah, the team has grown as well. So learning how to manage a team has been a massive thing for me to have to do as well, because it's something as you grow. You don't realize that's a whole nother element, as well, where it really
Donna 6:19
is. Yeah, yeah. And team management is not something that net just naturally comes like it's a strategy that comes into place. And absolutely, yeah. And how many students do you have?
Speaker 2 6:34
Were around 650 students, or take at a time? Yes. So
Donna 6:39
also managing a lot of moving Yes.
Speaker 2 6:43
And probably growing, you know, student wise, in the last couple of years, as well, from that 500 To sort of 650 Yep. And it goes up to seven comes down again. Yeah.
Donna 6:57
Yeah. Amazing. And what about your lifestyle? Because I'm, you know, running your business isn't the only thing you do, right?
Speaker 2 7:03
Right. So three girls, three beautiful girls. My eldest is 18 that I have a 16 or suspect turned 16. And I have an 11 year old as well. So three girls, one husband, lots of animals. A very extreme if you know me, that's kind of one of the ongoing jokes is we have lots of animals as well. So like, chickens, and chickens and dogs and everything. So we love pets. Yeah, it's funny, actually. So we're very busy. Yeah, very busy home life as well, this morning,
Donna 7:40
my boys because that we've just started school holidays, here at time of recording this. And we have chickens as well. And the kids kept coming into my office with this chicken, who they were worried about because its eyes kept closing, I think it's going to be fine. But you know, they were just really worried. And we've just renovated our house. I've got like brand new carpets, and they kept coming in with this chicken. I'm like, can you guys take it outside? I'll come and talk to you outside about the chicken before it shits all over my floor. I get it like, you know, there's always
Unknown Speaker 8:12
Yeah. Okay,
Donna 8:14
that we digress. So you could have taught for another studio, right? You could have followed your passion for dance and you know, created a beautiful, you know, opportunities for kids, which you know, in sharing your love for dance. So tell me why. Why build your own business? What was important to you about that side of it?
Speaker 2 8:37
Yeah, I think I was actually working for a beautiful studio owner, and amazing studio at the time, and I was in my 20s. And, honestly, you know that that whole 18 to 25 sort of period that I didn't really know what I wanted to do. And I was working in freight with the airlines and bit of everything, and teaching at the studio. And there was really no reason for me to leave as far as the job was amazing. I loved the kids there. But I wanted something for my I'm always a forward thinker, always thinking about my future. And I knew that I wanted something for myself. And to have a studio based on how I wanted to sort of grow it really. So I guess I just had that within me to want to have my own thing and make my own decisions. And yeah, and I also wanted to like the plan of the studio was to just create opportunities for the children. It wasn't very it's never really like we do competitions and everything like that, but it was never about that first. So yeah, I just wanted to create basically something a platform for, well, a business for myself where I could, it could be part of me and Yeah, I mean, nothing to do with wanting to nothing to do with business itself. Like, I had no idea about actual business. I just loved dancing, and I wanted a dance studio. So I thought there is what,
Donna 10:14
that's often how it starts, right is that we're good at something we're passionate about whatever it is that we do, and we start the business, and it's going along, okay, you know, things are ticking along. But then, you know, there is the opportunity, when we see the potential that our business could become something maybe bigger or better or whatever, that then it's like, okay, how do we grow this out away? You know, and we can have the skill set that goes along, and I'm x dance studio owner, so you know, the skill set the passion for it, you can see the need for it. So you jump in, and you do it, but then quickly learn that the business side of things is a bit of a steep learning curve.
Speaker 2 10:57
That's right. Yeah, absolutely. And I think also, because I have been doing it for 23 years, you know, and I'm happy. I've, I've done, amazing, but I also am happy to say that I've learned from mistakes as well. So, you know, we that's how we, that's how we learn really, from the mistakes and it's what you do with it. It's what we tell our kids. And so yeah, I grew before knowing about business. Yeah. Okay.
Donna 11:27
And so, tell us about that. So you went through a big growth face?
Speaker 2 11:32
Yep. And I think that, again, that was just, you know, you're in a great area, when you start a dance studio, you pick your area, probably a little bit different these days. But you know, you're looking at who's around and the number of children and that sort of staff, so it grew over the years. And based on those probably only a few dance studios in the area at that time, as well. Now, there's a lot more. So it grew based on the number of children around, but also, obviously, the work that I was putting in to get the children in and that, you know, the advertising and all that those normal sort of Everyday Things. And just being the type of studio that we were, we were great, we still are great with preschoolers. So I think that it just, it grew organically, like, you know, just by people would say to me, why, you know, how do you do so? Well, I'm like, I don't know, I just think we just, you know, yeah, it's who we are, like, we're just, you know, you people, you'd be yourself and people will come and they'll they'll, you'll put all those people in that? Uh, yeah, fit your values. I guess over the without, without knowing that was the reason I feel like that was the reason. Yeah, that was that makes sense.
Donna 12:52
Yeah, yeah. And tell me about when you reach that point, or that realization, and then started to make some pretty big transitions I've seen in you over the last, you know, 12 months, especially, but I'm sure it started before that, that that realization that things maybe needed to shift and change a little bit. So take us back to I guess, when you first started feeling that and tell us what you were feeling?
Speaker 2 13:21
Yeah, so I think, um, I always felt like I was literally chasing my tail. I have an amazing girl that worked with me beside me. Gemma and she, we would always just an hour tonight, and we would just kind of be on the phone everyday going right? What do we need to do today? And we're just we're just always chasing our tails, and always busy and always feeling overwhelmed. But like, at the end of the day, you know? And then I just started to, I guess, probably really COVID When everything fell apart for everybody. And we all kind of went okay, what if I'm not a dance studio and and what am I and because I could lose this like, do that whole unknowing, and then having to think of everything and going wow, this really does stop at me like this really does. Everybody can go on there, you know way but the business stops at the business owner and I felt like I had to think it was I was thinking of absolutely everything. I walked into the studio one day I went, I have to worry about that. I have to worry about that. Just everything I looked around was just, you know, overwhelming. Yeah. And I just started to reach out to people and basically start to reach out to well ask really, it was like I've never been one to ask for help.
Donna 14:55
And that's sometimes the hardest thing right is like asking for help when you know that you need Yeah,
Speaker 2 15:01
yeah. And the dance to industry is very, like you don't know, like, it's, I guess, for any business owner as well you feel alone, and you don't know who to ask, and you don't. So we're very lucky now that we've got platforms, like starting to success and online platforms where we can, you know, we can ask for help, and we can be part of these groups, and that can help us learn and everything. Yeah, and I just feel like I'm in such a better place now. That's so so I'd probably pinpoint it to COVID
Donna 15:35
as that moment where you're like, oh, okay, now I need to then do this differently.
Speaker 2 15:41
I just, I didn't Well, the thing was, I didn't want to come back after COVID. It made me reflect and go, if we're gonna if I'm going to come back. I don't want to come back doing it the way I was. Yes. That was it. It was like, I don't want to come back and basically chasing my tail. Yeah. And doing it like I was because it was just enough as enough.
Donna 16:00
Yeah. And that's certainly the path to burnout. Right there. It was. Yeah, absolutely. Yep. Yeah. And also like to spend so long creating an amazing business, like, you have to then realize that, and this happens to a lot of business owners certainly happened to me as well, where you go, if I wasn't doing what I'm doing, literally, my business would fall apart around me. And I've worked so hard for a number of years to make this what it is, it needs to be stronger than that. It needs to be more robust than that, that if it's not, if I'm not here to run it, it can still run without me. And it can do really well, even if not better, sometimes. Right? Like, you don't slowly Hey, they're doing all the things.
Speaker 2 16:43
Yeah. Because what are we what are we, at the end of the day? What are we doing it for? If we can't, you know, like, I've been doing it for this long now? What What am I doing it for? If if they can help me in the next 10 years, as well, because I'm starting to look at life as well, in my next 10 years, you know?
Donna 17:04
Yeah, exactly. And we started our business, because we want the freedom and the flexibility to work our own hours and to have, you know, a fair exchange of time and energy that we're putting in that we get, you know, the profit back out of the business, which you know, you and I've talked about. And also I think, you know, knowing that as we get to a point where either we want to round things off and start to either retire and working with a couple of business owners that are wanting to retire from their business, and how do we then make sure that the business is saleable, that's really important that we're not just creating something for the now. But that when it comes time that you want to sell that you can if you want to, that's really important as well. And I love helping business owners in that space, not to say that that's where you're at. But you know, there are, we should always be thinking about that we're building it to sell, should you either want to or need to, you know, if there's something that happens physically to us, or to someone around us, and it's like I can't actually run this business any anymore for the model that it was built upon. So I need to sell it. Well, Alicia got those opportunities to do it.
Speaker 2 18:18
And you don't want to just have done everything for that all that time. To not have that at the end. Yeah. Yeah. And yeah. And like you just said, we we start our businesses, because absolutely, that was another thing. Reason I wanted my own business because I wanted to get married. I wanted to have kids. And I wanted to be there for my my kids, which I'm sure there's every other female out there saying that right now, as well. And then all of a sudden, if you're not doing it right, and you don't. Yeah, and then you're doing what I was doing back then you end up working in the business 24/7. And even though you're trying to be there for the the kids, the stress of the business is too much. And you're not really there when you're when you're at home. You're not really at home.
Donna 19:08
Yeah, yeah. Yeah, absolutely. So I think our paths crossed. I think you jumped on to an online training session I was running or something like that. Yes.
Speaker 2 19:19
So I was following you for a bit as well. Because, yeah, we've I think there was a couple of online training sessions actually. The mini courses. Yeah. So and that was referred to me as well. So I jumped on to one of those and sessions. I love to do all the planning sessions. Yep.
Donna 19:37
Yeah. And and we were messaging a little bit and that kind of stuff. Then you jumped in and you did ready to rise, which is a course that that that we did and that was early 2023. So earlier this year, and then you continued working with me because you became a member of soaring to success which you only used to be able to get into Only two sets of stumbling used to only be able to get into it if you've already done ready to rise, but I've changed that now. Right? So you can now jump in doors are open. But what sparked your interest initially to work with me? You said that people had referred you to me, which is great. But then what was the turning point that you were like? Yes, I'm in.
Speaker 2 20:27
Um, well, definitely, for ready to rise? Well, again, again, I guess I'd been I've done a few than many courses. And also looked at some of your online marketing things. So the marketing was a big thing that drew me to you as well, because you obviously have a lot of knowledge on marketing and that sort of stuff. Really, I get a lot out of the, like, I don't join a lot of many groups, I try not to put myself everywhere, because I feel like you're not gonna get anything. It's just too much. So I'm off. I'm very much drawn to people that buy, I guess, the vibe and the, you know, how the values and all that sort of stuff, the field, but the ready to rise program, I joined because it had lots of I've done and this is where I think some people might make the mistake and you hear them say, I've done that before I've done that, you know, I've done the ideal customer, journey, and Avatar and all that sort of stuff. But you need to this is something that you really need, I think that you really need to continue to do. It's not a one and done thing. And the ready to rise program had everything in it from looking at your ideal customer to the very end looking after yourself and things like that, like everything and in between. Yeah. So I think that's, I've been wanting to for a while. And that's what got me into that ready to rise. And then and also being part of a group that was not that had different a variety of business owners in it. Yeah, great as well. And then at the end of ready to rise, I was like, Well, I'm not ready to leave these business owners. Yeah. Because in the group we've made, you know, I've got to know the people in the group as well, which you can learn so much from, and there are a variety of different businesses, nothing to do with dancing. Yeah. So networking as well was a big thing, like getting out of my comfort zone of my dance industry, and reaching out to other
Donna 22:33
people. Yeah. Because you can learn so much from other industries and apply it to your business, even though it's something completely different. That's the power of it.
Speaker 2 22:43
Yeah, totally. And giving each other that bit of I love how we give each other that bit of feedback and support and just ideas, you know, yeah, help you out with your situation. Yeah. So that's been really great.
Donna 22:56
Yeah, like people in the group are really generous. That's what I love about it, as well as it's not like people will hold their ideas and guard them for fear of somebody stealing them. Like, really, we
Speaker 2 23:06
want to help each other. Yeah, we want to give and help each other.
Donna 23:10
Yeah. Yeah. Amazing. And since doing, whether it be ready to rise, that was the big breakthrough for you, or whether it's been in soaring to success, because it doesn't really matter, right at this point. Because when you join soaring to success, now you actually get access to ready to rise as well. So, which is riches, really awesome. So yeah, it's great. What has been the biggest breakthrough for you? Do you think, after going through after working with me in this space that you have?
Speaker 2 23:44
Gosh, there's been so much should have worn me on that question, because there's been so much after I lost him
Donna 23:52
that front as it has to be like organic, and I want that. Yeah.
Speaker 2 23:57
Well, I love soaring to success, I love the masterclasses in there. So gosh, I think there's so much honestly, the doing the planning and working on that planning in there, the 90 Day plans. So really working on that as a massive session and then sitting down afterwards, because then sit down afterwards and then going to my team after that. So it's a whole big, like, thing that I do with that, that session there. That is really changing the way my business is working. Because as a as a team. When I go back to my leadership team with the 90 Day plans and stuff, it's actually allowing us to we're creating those goals and it's moving forward. So the businesses, you know, where you find all we've sat there and gone, okay, we've been talking about this for two years or whatever, and we still haven't done this now. So that word that 90 day plan Session. That's a really big thing that has come out of it for me. And, and I say that and again, there's lots of a lot of people do 90 Day planning snow day sessions and that sort of thing. But the one within slurring to SAS, it says, Oh, well, I stumbled over soaring to success now know your problem. Says it's been really valuable tool for me that one, they're really valuable. And again, it's been looking, it looks over so much as well, not just your 90 day count, it doesn't just look over that next nine days as a calendar, I
Donna 25:36
guess. Yeah.
Speaker 2 25:38
I think people will be surprised when they if they did that with you. Yeah. And come out of it. Yeah. So that was really, that's really good. And I feel like we're really working towards those goals. And also the accountability. So when I come back to I'm like, Okay, this has to be done. I'm not coming back until it's done. So I'm taking the things off as well. So that accountability sessions has been great. Having that I joined the extra level where I had the that accountability session as well. And I think that is a definite game changer, as well.
Donna 26:12
Yeah, absolutely. Because just for context, if you're listening along, so you can join soaring to success at the, let's call it the base level. And then if you want to jump up to the accelerator level, which is kind of like the VIP level, it's a little extra month, but you get monthly accountability calls. So it's small group sessions that we get together once a month. But it does keep you accountable, doesn't it?
Speaker 2 26:36
Yeah, they definitely were there, honestly. And I know not maybe not everyone will be able to do it. But if you can, I would highly recommend that. Yeah.
Donna 26:46
And it's also a space where like, there's, you know, we limit it to the number of people on the group. So it's not like you're in a room with a virtual room with like, 100 members, you actually get time to be this is the problem I'm experiencing, or I'm a little bit stuck here, or I've got this idea. What do you guys think? Or what do you think Donna, if I did it this way. And it's it's that even though you're in a group situation, you do get that one on one time with me. And I know that for a few of our other members, they really value it from that perspective as well, because they come prepared with questions and makes you go, okay, so it's, you know, week four on the calendar, it's group coaching week, what am I what do I need? What do I need from this session? What questions can I bring to Donna that is going to help me to get unblocked or to you know, really maximize? You know, reaching my goals? So, yeah,
Speaker 2 27:39
yep, definitely. And if you don't stop and think about all this, when you're in a business, you don't even know what your goals are. So you need to stop and you need to do the work to if you want to go anywhere. Really? Yeah, yeah.
Donna 27:51
So other than that, so that sounds like maybe your favorite is the 90 day planning sessions we do every quarter. So yeah,
Speaker 2 27:59
if we have to pick a favorite, but there's so many favorites, because I've loved the master classes as well. What I mean, that was a really specific one, in the master class, the imposter syndrome. Oh, yeah. Oh, my gosh, everybody needs to listen to that one.
Donna 28:18
Yeah. Because we do as business owners, we second guess ourselves. And, you know, we can do miles in our heads thinking about what we think other people are thinking or that we're not good enough at this or, you know, and that impostor syndrome, although it's kind of become a bit of a, I don't know, a thing, you know, that people say, Well, that's true, like it is what you feel and I think that was with the lovely Mr. Walkinshaw came in and delivers that masterclass. So, we it's not just masterclasses with me, obviously, there's value that I can bring as a high performance coach and with my experience of running lots of different businesses. But I also make sure that we've got guest experts that come in, because I don't know or claim to know everything. And I want you guys to be exposed to many different areas of business, but also to keep your skills up to date in a changing business world. Right. And so, having those guests, experts that come in to deliver on a particular topic, whatever our theme is for the month is really important to me that it's not just all me that you get it you actually get a range of people who and then that also builds beyond the network that you have other you know, members of soaring to success. You're also building your network of experts that you can call upon. If you want to go go that extra and be like I really want to work say for example, on creating social media ads. We've got a I actually just recorded a podcast before jumping on with you with Ashley Boston. She's coming in in November to deliver about how to create those. We had Ingrid Fernandez who came in and she delivered a session around luggage salary for your business. So, you know, it's it's always opening your eyes and building your contact list for if I need to draw up a new contract for my staff member, or I'm going to work on a project with, you know, the local council or something like that, what contract do I need in place? You can then go, I'll reach out to that person.
Speaker 2 30:22
Absolutely. And there was a really good one on SEO as well just pop that one in there as well, because that's amazing. And he's actually from Emory in Perth as well. So yes, sir. I mean, again, exactly right. Like we've got, I feel like through the master classes, I've got the created those contacts as well. So if I was needed help on SEO, he would, you know, be the first person that I'd probably be able to reach out to.
Donna 30:51
Yeah, so yeah. And the other thing, too, is that you don't necessarily have to show up live. So everything gets recorded, it goes into the library, which is building all the time. So if you can't make it live, you can submit your questions earlier to me if you wanted to. And I know a few people have done that. But you can go and watch it at a later date. And so I think that's also important to note as well, for anyone who's maybe thinking about it, is that whatever we've already done, you have access to that coming into the future. If you're like, I really want to learn about that. But I can't make it live. It doesn't mean you miss out.
Speaker 2 31:32
Exactly. Yeah, I mean, I try I try to make most of my life. But yeah, there's those times when obviously, you just can't and
Donna 31:40
yeah, yeah. And you do turn up live to most of them, which is great. I
Speaker 2 31:44
do. I do try Yes. Because that's where I try to allocate my you know, another learning is allocate my time for myself. And if there's an you know, because it's all scheduled, it's everything goes in my diary, but should a meeting come up? And I can't make it at least I can. Yeah, go back.
Donna 32:01
Yeah. And I know what some of the other members do as well, is that that like the Wednesday because all of our stuff happens on a Wednesday. So then the Wednesday becomes your day of professional development. So it is masterclass. Yeah. And so then that day is blocked out. So whatever you learn in the master class, or the the 90 day planning or whatever it is that we're doing, you can then put those actions in straightaway, to see the results in your business. So it works out. Well.

And I actually love it now. It's actually you do Yeah, it is my day of personal development, or whatever I might be working on. And you finish one of those master classes, and you just sit there and you just keep writing or planning or whatever. So that's where I've taken that time for myself. Yeah, yeah. As much as possible, as much as humanly possible being a mom of three. Yeah. And that's a thing I perfect all the time. It's definitely not perfect. But you know,
Donna 32:59
yeah. And it's the bite sized pieces, right? That's also really easy, because it's not, gosh, we're all time poor, right? We're all time poor. And so we need things, but we need it to be bite sized and easy to action. And I think that that's what soaring to success is? Well, that's certainly the intention when I created it for sure.
Speaker 2 33:21
Yeah. And being able to look back and go Well, rather than the last year be a scramble, because you've done planning, you can look back and go, well, actually, I know we've been flat out busy. Because you're going to be busy, right? But look at everything you've done, because everything's you've got it all there, you can actually look back and go, but I've done all this. So you can see it all I get paper as well. Yeah. Which is, which is good, too. It's been planned.
Donna 33:48
It's planned, and it's a strategic plan. We're not just throwing spaghetti at the wall. It's like, well, you know, over 12 months, you want to get to here. So every quarter when we sit down and we do that planning session, it's you know, chunking it down into the three months. And when you get to the end of that 12 months and you look back, you've actually worked towards the strategy that you were going for not just kind of Higgledy Piggledy all over the shop, and then you feel like we haven't really got where we wanted to
Speaker 2 34:17
be. Correct. Yeah, absolutely. Yeah.
Donna 34:20
So to wrap things up, can you maybe circling back, you've been in business 23 years, which is a long time. And we have members like you who have been in business a long time. We also have members who have only been in business a couple of years. So if you were to turn back time what would maybe be your top three tips for a business owner who's maybe like, you know, three, five years in? What would you suggest for them?
Speaker 2 34:54
I would I would absolutely 100% If you Like I said before, if you've generally when you start a business, it's because of what you love, like candlemaking or anything, you that's how you want to, you know, mine was dance. But I would say, if you don't have that background, and even even if you do have a background, I just I think being part of being able to go online and and find your your group, I mean, obviously, I would, I would obviously suggest joining a group, like soaring success to success oriented success. And definitely, like investing in yourself and making sure that that becomes a priority, because you will, so many of us say to ourselves, that's fine. But I don't have time for that, like, that's fine. But I've got to, you know, make the money to be able to pay for that course, or beat make the money to be able to do this. And you're just unless you build your business and structure it, like get the foundation in place. Then it just crumbles. And I have been there prior to you know, reaching out, and not not that anyone's seen seen me crumble, because I would never let that happen, obviously. But but you know what I mean? I felt it and it to anyone, you know, I'd say to dance studio owners, but really to anyone's starting a business, learn about it, learn learn about business and find your find your tribe, and definitely have support around you. Because we you know, the reason for impostor syndrome is because there's so many people out there to bring you down. And that's just how the world works. So you really need to find a team of support about Reggie and not within your just within your household. So it's awesome to have that. It's awesome to have your friends. But to find that support out there on platforms like we've we've got it there use it. Yeah, I'm interested use it.
Donna 37:06
Amazing. Yeah. Thank you for sharing. And thank you for sharing with so much courage and honesty in you know, like, it's not hard. It is hard to kind of, you know, admit that it's been tough at times. And I think that not enough business owners share that. That's part of what I why I do what I do with this podcast, especially. So thank you for that. And thank you for your beautiful words about working with me and soaring to success. I really appreciate it. Like many of the women who are members of soaring to success Terrans business was established when she joined, like over 20 years, and her business was doing well. But she knew she wanted her business to run differently to not be going around around in circles. And to do that she needed some direction and accountability to really change that and to level up. And it all shifted when Taryn decided to really value and invest herself in her business. And part of that was working with me and committing to doing things differently. It all comes down to really a choice, right? And you have the choice to go all in and to level up and to leave nothing to chance. Taryn had her vision. She had a huge passion for the business that she had created and the lifestyle that she wanted to make as part of that. And she also recognized that she needed the support of a business proach to really take that further and go next level with it all. And so instead of spending the next 10 years going around in circles in the way that she had in the previous, you know, 20 years, instead of wasting time and energy and money muddling her way through, she got clarity on the things that she knew would move the needle, and would take her business further, she reached out for what she needed. And I think that's so important. So after listening, I hope that this episode has inspired you to go after what you want to reshape your business in a way that feels more aligned to your values so that your your business isn't totally dependent upon you right and that don't be afraid to reach out for the business support and the guidance that you need.
